Cameroon-Chad railroad: CPCS completes feasibility study
CPCS, in collaboration with Zutari, and funded by the African Development Bank, carried out a feasibility study aimed at improving the transportation of people and goods via an 800 km railway from the city of Ngaoundéré in Cameroon to N’Djaména, Chad’s capital.
CPCS is committed to the strategic planning of a railroad with great economic potential. This project represents a significant step towards reducing transport costs, integrating transport networks, and boosting trade by making remote regions more accessible.
Highlights
- June 2024: CPCS presented a summary of its findings at an investor roundtable in Yaoundé, Cameroon. According to the Cameroonian magazine L’Équation, “after high-level presentations, recommendations were prescribed to proceed with project implementation.”
- Route analysis: CPCS analyzed three potential routes to determine the best route for the Cameroon-Chad railroad. Project costs could range from 2,500 to 4,367 billion FCFA (approx. $4.25B to 7.42B USD).
- Economic benefits: A Cameroon-Chad railroad would help with the transport of passengers and goods, unlocking economic opportunities in the northern regions of both countries.
- Technical challenges: Key obstacles for a Cameroon-Chad railroad include the Adamaoua Plateau, a dense and irregular hydrographic network, and 22 protected natural areas.

- “CPCS is a proven advisor to decision makers on rail transport development strategy. As part of this study, CPCS identified and analyzed three different 800+ km alignments to help Chadian and Cameroonian decision makers understand the technical, commercial, economic, environmental, social, and institutional aspects for each option.”
Background: The Governments of Cameroon and Chad have secured a loan from the African Development Bank (AfDB) to finance the feasibility study for the Ngaoundéré-N’Djamena railroad project. The financing agreement was signed on February 20, 2021, in Yaoundé by the AfDB country representative and Alamine Ousmane Mey, Cameroon’s Minister of the Economy, Planning and Regional Development, in the presence of the two countries’ Transport Ministers.
